The Barbados Road Safety Association (BRSA) is calling for harsher penalties for those who cause road traffic accidents.

President of the BRSA, Sharmane Roland-Bowen, said too many people were injured or killed in accidents.

“Too many people die and are seriously injured every year on our roads for such a small country, through the criminal act of another person. For this, we call on traffic law enforcement to conduct thorough investigations after a fatal or serious crash, to find out if a crime was committed to prevent recurrence.”

Roland-Bowen said drivers should have their licenses suspended and be forced to complete a programme that teaches them how to drive safely.

“Drivers’ licenses are a privilege, not a right. People who cause death on the road or have proven unfit to drive should lose their license for a minimum of five years and they should have to complete a traffic offender course in line with defensive driving techniques.”

She added that there should be a way to rehabilitate those who caused harm on the road.

Roland-Bowen was speaking at the association’s church service on Snunday morning to commemorate World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims which was held at the Covenant Life Teaching Centre in Green Hill, St Michael.  (RT)
