As the number of people living on the street continues to increase, philanthropist Sharon Bellamy-Thompson is pleading for help in establishing a second facility on the island that can cater to their needs.

“For the last five years, I’ve been saying that I need a shelter where I can house them, feed them and get [them] the necessary treatment. I would bring in the barbers and nurses and stuff like that because there’s a need for another shelter here for the homeless people in Barbados,” she said.

Bellamy-Thompson, founder of Fishers of Men Charity, teamed up with the Kiwanis Club of Barbados Benevolence for their feeding programme in Jubilee Gardens, The City, on Sunday.

“Every day I’ve been seeing more and more people – a lot of the young ladies, even with their children – and they’re nearby the Treasury Building. It really hurts me to see young women on the streets now. They range from 18 (years old) up to about 70 or 80-something,” she said.

Bellamy-Thompson says it also a challenge to cater for the growing numbers from her home. (Nation News)
