Barbados and Cuba have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will pave the way for cooperation between the two Caribbean nations in areas of health and pharmaceuticals.

The signing, which took place at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre yesterday by representatives of Export Barbados and Cuban company BioCuba Farma, was witnessed by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel who is here on a State Visit, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kerrie Symmonds and other officials.

Mottley also said the two nations would move “as a matter of urgency” in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers for which Cuba has made great strides.

“There are simply too many Barbadians who lose limbs because of the diabetic condition and there really is simply too much pressure on our health care system as a result.

“The Cubans have developed medication that can effectively work to reduce diabetic ulcers. We have therefore agreed that our appropriate regulatory agencies should be in discussion with theirs to see as a matter of urgency how Barbadians, too, may benefit and to reduce the number of our own families who are regrettably exposed to this condition.”

The two countries also agreed on other areas of training. (Nation News)
