Newly crowned champion jockey and leading apprentice Teshawn Hazelwood capped a superb off year with his first riding title when piloting home the favourite Joqular in the Boxing Day feature race on Monday at the Garrison Savannah.

Owned by Darwin Clarke, the four-year bay filly went to the lead when the gates opened in the inaugural running of the Robert J. Bourque Boxing Day Stakes and Trophy over 1 570 metres on the Diamonds International Crown Of Light Boxing Day At The Races card.

The winning pair only received serious competition when the horses swing into the home stretch in the grade 1 race worth $33 000 as Brillant News under dethroned champion jockey Rasheed Hughes surged on her outside.

Inspired Adventure made up a lot of ground on the outside under five-time Gold Cup-winning jockey Jalon Samuel but had too much to do.  (LY)
