Students are being encouraged to pursue foreign languages as a career option.

Last Friday, the Barbados Language Centre of the Barbados Community College hosted the first Foreign Language Fair at the Eyrie, St Michael campus, and students from the various secondary schools showed keen interest in the displays.

“Right now we teach French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese . . .essentially it’s about culture. Language is just a vehicle that allows people to communicate with one another but essentially, it’s about people connecting with people and language does that,” said tutor Paul Blackman.

The centre is also considering expanding the offerings to include Japanese, Arabic, South Korean and possibly Swahili, but for the moment, students were able to interact with people from a variety of delegations and embassies. (Nation News)
