Former Minister of Transport Michael Lashley will be contesting to become the next vice president of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP).
During a joint zonal meeting at Church Village, St Philip on Sunday night, Lashley told scores of party faithful that it was the right time to run to become an executive member of the party.
“Now is the time for me to run for office in this party. I believe that I can come into this party now in the executive and make a contribution. I believe I can add some sort of weight to this party, I believe that I can walk up and down the 30 constituencies with the young candidates and give them some of my experience and pull them along the way I believe my other colleagues will join me too,” Lashley said.
DLP president Dr Ronnie Yearwood and former MP for St Philip West Dr David Estwick also spoke during the meeting.
From 2003 to 2018, Lashley was the Member of Parliament for St Philip North. He ran for reelection in 2022, but he was unsuccessful as the Barbados Labour Party secured a second consecutive 30-0 victory in the General Election.
Lashley said he intended to continue to fight to uphold the country’s democracy and to represent underprivileged Barbadians.
“I also believe that not only the men, but we will bring the women along too to fight for democracy and fight against the injustice happening to poor people in this country,” he added. (TG)
