Popular social media site Instagram went offline just after 6 p.m. Sunday, leaving millions worldwide unable to access their accounts.

Site downdetector.com noted around 5:56 p.m. there were about 49 reports of outages, but 15 minutes later, over 128 000 people said they were locked out. It reached a peak around 6:40 p.m., with more than 185 000 reports.

Instagram did not state the reason for the outage, which affected both the app and website.

At 7:30 p.m., some users were still unable to access their accounts and many went to Twitter (#instagramdown)  to comment on the issue. (SAT)
