Port of Spain, Trinidad – Commonwealth Secretary General, Patricia Scotland, will be the featured speaker at a three-day workshop here on stemming the tide of male violence in the Caribbean.

The conference, scheduled for June 14 to 16 and organised by Lifeline, a local non-profit organization, will discuss methods of reversing the tide of violence committed by young men between the ages of 15 and 35, through collaboration with stakeholders.

A statement from the organisers said the workshop will bring together participants from across the Caribbean, the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, with the ultimate objectives of understanding the importance of collaboration in reducing male perpetrated violence, strengthen public-private partnerships in the quest for an end to male perpetrated violence, and the creation of action plans for the development of Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Committees (MARAC).

Topics to be discussed include “Making Collaboration Central to National Policy on Violence”, “Administrative Systems which facilitation Collaboration” and “”Setting up and operationalizing National Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Committee (MARAC).

Earlier this year at a Caribbean Community (CARICOM)  summit to address the region’s crime situation, leaders agreed to develop and implement targeted programmes and strategies to address vulnerable youth at risk of becoming perpetrators and victims of crime.

They also agreed to reform the education systems to empower citizens and better enable their socio-emotional development and promote public awareness campaigns that challenge harmful beliefs, attitudes and behaviours that contribute to crime and violence. (CMC)
