A state-of-the-art power plant has been formally opened in St Lucy as Barbados steps up plans to expand the generation of cheaper electricity.
The clean energy bridge plant, with a capacity to generate 33 megawatts of electricity from fossil fuel, was officially opened by Minister of Energy Lisa Cummins at Trents, St Lucy, on Tuesday.
Officials including managing director of Barbados Light & Power, Roger Blackman, said the plant would generate electricity that is cheaper, more efficiently produced and with a cleaner process.
The enhanced efficiencies are expected to contribute to lower electricity prices for consumers.
“Since its commissioning in June 2022, the clean energy bridge units have been performing exceptionally well, resulting in lower fuel costs for customers every month. Having operated for more than 6 000 hours, it has collectively delivered over 230 million kWh (kilowatt hours) of electricity to customers across our island. For the first five months of this year, the clean energy bridge has provided 24 per cent of the total energy consumed by customers,” Blackman said. (HH)
