Skerrit’s tribute to Sir Lloyd

A statement from Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit

I was saddened this morning by the news of the passing of former Barbados Prime Minister, Sir Lloyd Erskine Sandiford.

He was a stellar statesman and devout regionalist.

I met Sir Lloyd on several occasions and was comforted by his expressed and demonstrated confidence in the ability of young people. He encouraged me as a young Caribbean leader.

I believe the lives and work of that era of Caribbean leaders need to be adequately recorded and made available as a source of knowledge and inspiration to today’s leaders. Sir Lloyd later served as Barbados’ Ambassador to China and again in that posting, he adopted a regional approach and viewpoint on issues.

I speak on behalf of the Government and people of Dominica when I say we share the sense of loss of the people of Barbados and we stand ready to participate at the highest level in the official celebration of his life and contribution to the development of Barbados and the wider Caribbean.

May he rest in eternal peace and may light perpetual shine on him. (PR/SAT)
