By 2028, the use of diesel buses by the Transport Board should be a thing of the past, as Government undertakes plans for an all-electric state-owned public transport system.
At the same time, Minister of Transport and Works and Water Resources, Santia Bradshaw says that repair and maintenance entities such as the United Commercial Autoworks Ltd (UCAL) will need to keep pace with this impending change.
Bradshaw made the disclosure at the signing of a memorandum of understanding on Friday between Government and UCAL, an agreement which onboards a suite of solutions to the worker-owned company.
This includes the transference of state-owned equipment to UCAL as well as the establishment of a base of operations. The Transport Board currently has a complement of 127 buses, 49 of which are electric and the remainder diesel engines. (CLM)
