Barbados women’s hockey medal hopes were dealt a serious blow after they were defeated 8-1 by Cuba in their hockey semi-final yesterday at the Estadio Del Parque El Este in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Barbados conceded an early goal in the second minute to Cuba’s Cheila Darias, who found the net after a defensive lapse.

The Bajans rebuilt their offence and were rewarded in the 15th minute with a penalty corner which D’Jamila Edwards successfully dispatched to level the scores at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter started much like the first, with Barbados giving up another goal immediately after the restart, this time to Cuba’s captain Yunia Milanes, who took advantage of a penalty stroke, to give Cuba the 2-1 lead in the 16th minute.  (NM)
