Nearly ten years after he was sentenced to hang, convicted killer Dwayne Omar Severin was resentenced to 37 years in prison by the No. 2 Supreme Court yesterday.

However, he will spend 5 745 days after a number of deductions.

Severin, formerly of the Crane, St Philip, had been found guilty, in May 2014, of killing Virgil Barton on November 30, 2009.

He was one of a number of former condemned killers who had their death penalties vacated and were ordered resentenced in the wake of a June 2018 Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruling which said that a section of the Offences Against The Person Act, which allowed for the mandatory death sentence, was unconstitutional, and that Section 11 of the Constitution, which gave the right to the protection of the law, was enforceable.
