Predictably, West Indies’ T20 International captain Rovman Powell has been confirmed as captain of the Barbados Royals for this year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Barbadian all-rounder Kyle Mayers, who led the team in last year’s final after the appointed captain David Miller returned to his homeland South Africa for international duty, will serve as Powell’s deputy.

Powell, 30, a swashbuckling middle-order batsman, led the Jamaica Tallawahs to the CPL title last season but joined the Royals in a trade-off for Antiguan leg-spinner Haydn Walsh.

Another non-Barbadian, Keiron Pollard, also captained the Barbados-based franchise in the early years of the CPL.

Powell will be working closely with head coach Trevor Penney and Royals’ Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara, the former outstanding Sri Lankan left-handed batsman and wicket-keeper. (EZS)
