Former hockey champions Maple will be among one of the 29 teams in competition when the 38th edition of the Barbados Hockey Festival officially gets going tomorrow at the National Hockey Centre in Wildey and the Usain Bolt Complex.

The increased number of teams in competition prompted the Barbados Hockey Federation (BHF) to resort to using two venues instead of one as they return to almost pre-pandemic numbers and secretary of the BHF Kofi Hinds is encouraged by the increased participation.

“Coming off the performances at the CAC Games, the feeling is one of excitement and optimism. You can see a hunger for hockey and the whole hockey community has been very responsive to the calls for the festival,” Hinds told Sun Sport.

“We have more local teams coming back into the competition and more overseas teams also coming back. It is the first year since before the COVID-19 pandemic that we have to use two fields so from that you can appreciate the number of teams we have coming back into the competition.”  (NM)
