Deacons fail to get over hill

Champions Deacons suffered a weak start to the defence of their senior women’s knockout volleyball title when the preliminary rounds of that competition were served off at the Wildey Gymnasium on Monday night.

In a Zone C game which meandered for over two hours, Deacons took the first set from Hill Road before losing a five-setter 25-19, 20-25, 16-25, 26-24, 13-15.

After Chargers had earlier lost a five-setter to the unpredictable Phoenix Security Services Carlton, their coach Lerone Knight changed his shirt and shoes to bring about a change of fortune for his second team Hill Road.

Both Deacons and Hill Road committed several serving and attacking errors causing the contest to drag on, and making a winner difficult to predict.  (KB)
