Several bags of marijuana were among items stolen from a bond at the old Seawell Airport next to the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) in a sophisticated crime which is being called “a national security breach”.

DAILY NATION investigations reveal that over the weekend, between Sunday and Monday, culprits cut through the perimeter fence on the compound in order to gain access to an area where bonds are located. They then broke the lock at the rear of one of the bonds and made off with several items including the illegal drugs as well as several fire sticks and other items. These were items which were confiscated by the Customs Department over the years.

This paper was reliably informed that police have started a high level investigation into the theft but have kept the details under wraps for security reasons.

When contacted yesterday Deputy Commissioner of Police Erwin Boyce would only say: “I can confirm that we are conducting investigations into the matter. That is all we can confirm at this time.”

A similar statement was given by Comptroller of Customs, Owen Holder, yesterday evening.

He said: “I can verify that the breach occurred. The police are doing the investigations now and will await their report.”

A Government official also told this newspaper that he could not speak on the matter because of national security reasons. (MB)
