Defending champion jockey in Barbados, Teshawn Hazelwood, has surrendered his title two months shy of a year after deciding to take the plunge and head for the greener pastures of Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
The in-form 25-year-old apprentice of Briar Hall in Christ Church left Barbados yesterday where he will join up with champion Barbadian trainer Saffie Joseph Jr at Gulfstream Park.
Hazelwood, who is presently second in the jockey’s standing at the Garrison Savannah on 20 wins, has obtained the necessary paperwork that will allow him the privilege of riding at least five years in the United States of America.
He will have the opportunity to ride a couple horses for Joseph while hopefully developing his skills and gathering steady business on the circuit.
Hazelwood has made the most of his second opportunity when several of this country’s junior apprentices made the move up north. (LY)
