Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham said more staffing and assistance for judges are part of the plan to improve the running of Barbados’ courts.
During a special sitting of the Supreme Court yesterday morning to mark the opening of the new legal year 2023-2024, Sir Patterson itemised some of the changes including assistance for judges in the management of dockets, continuous training for the judiciary and having Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) fully up and running.
Managing their dockets is the sole responsibility of individual judges, Sir Patterson said, while proposing that each judge be assigned his/her own judicial assistant, rather than a shared one.
Sir Patterson, whose retirement is months away, said he had asked the government to accelerate the process for providing the judicial officers with the necessary help. (SD)
