Barbados is under no threat from a tsunami in the wake of an earth tremor earlier Tuesday.
The Barbados Meteorological Services gave the update as part of an Earthquake Information Statement (alert level GREEN), and reassured the public there was no need to evacuate as the tremor might have been felt along coastal areas.
Both the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the United States Geological Survey registered the earthquake at 11:26 a.m. at a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale. It was a depth of 25.8km, coordinates 12.6N 59.7W or 33 miles South South-West of Bridgetown.
UWI Seismic Research Centre recorded it at 5.6.
Many people across the capital city were heard asking each other if they felt the quake.
Workers at the General Post Office, Immigration Department, Unicomer (Courts), CIBC FirstCaribbean in The City, as well as Chelston Park and the E. Humphrey Walcott Building on Culloden Road, all evacuated as word spread.
The Met Office said there were no threats to the area, and to date, no impacts have been reported. (SAT)
