The race for the Goddard Enterprises Limited Division One women’s title took an unusual twist Wednesday night at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Powered by the United States-based Shonte Seale, Deacons inflicted the season’s first defeat on double crown hopefuls UWI Blackbirds 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17.

Then defending champions Burger King Clapham Toners let slip their slim hopes of overhauling the Blackbirds when they were edged by Warrens 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 25-21, 9-15.

The attack by Barbados player Seale was awesome, as she dragged less talented teammates along with her elevated spiking from the front and backcourt. The vicious counter by Tenielle Chapman-Goodluck for the Blackbirds kept the game competitive at a tremendous level of excitement. (KB)
