Barbadian Zane Maloney will be a reserve driver for Stake F1 team Kick Sauber for the 2024 Grand Prix season. The Swiss based motorsport team revealed in an announcement earlier today that he will share those reserve driving duties with Theo Pourchaire, the 2023 Formula 2 champion.
Speaking at the announcement, Sauber Academy Director Beat Zehnder said “We are delighted to welcome Zane as the latest addition to the Sauber Academy. His path through the junior series has been remarkable so far and, with his speed and potential, he surely makes a great addition to our talented roster.
“In addition to his Formula 2 campaign, where he will aim to succeed our own Théo Pourchaire to the title, Zane will also share with him the reserve driver role for Stake F1 Team. On behalf of the whole team, I give him my warmest welcome onboard, and look forward to working together and achieving great success.
”Maloney, who will also be a part of the team’s driver development programme, expressed his delight at signing on with Sauber Academy. “I am honoured to join the Sauber Academy, and to take on the role of one of Stake F1 Team’s reserve drivers,” the 20-year-old said. “The Sauber name resonates with Formula One, as it has been part of the sport for over 30 years, paving the way for so many drivers who went on to achieve great success. I am pleased to become part of this family, and I am looking forward to working together this season, as I move closer to my goal of becoming a Formula One driver.
”Maloney quickly developed a reputation in the motorsport world for his performances after his switch from go karting to single seater racing and in 2019 he became the first rookie ever to win the British F4 Championship outright. Following that success, Zane rose through the ranks year after year collecting podiums and wins.
In 2022, he had his biggest achievement to date, as he claimed second place in the FIA Formula 3 Championship in his debut and only season at that level. That stellar performance, which included three Feature Race victories, saw him elected FIA Rookie Of The Year for the seasons and led to a promotion to Formula 2. His debut at that level last year was one to remember as he finished third at the Bahrain International Circuit in the first race of the season. That podium finish was one of four he collected that season which earned him a tenth place finish in the standings and third amongst the rookies competing.
Maloney is currently preparing for his second F2 campaign with Rodin Motorsport.
