Two officers hurt in explosion at sea

PORT OF SPAIN – Police are continuing their investigations into an incident at sea in which two officers attached to the Coastal Support Unit were injured during an explosion on Thursday.

The police said that “PC Tirbanie and PC Gonzales were aboard Marine Vehicle CP-002 in the Gulf of Paria, after refuelling the vessel (and) as they were nearing Peaks, an explosion was allegedly heard from the stern of the vessel which threw both occupants into the sea”.

It said that the officers were assisted by the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard and that they were later transferred to the St James hospital for treatment.

“PC Tirbanie is reported to have received burn injuries to his face, left and right arms and back, while PC Gonzales received an injury to his left leg,” the police statement said, adding “investigations are ongoing into the matter”. (CMC)
