Road falls apart

Less than 24 hours after Chinese workers finally resumed road works at King Street, St Simon’s, St Andrew, following a lengthy break, a large section of the road collapsed forcing them to close off the road to vehicular traffic.

As a result, late yesterday evening the workers were busy trying to clear another section of the land to install a temporary bypass road.

Corporate communications specialist Joyann Haigh, who is representing the China National Complete Plant Import Export Corporation (COMPLANT) blamed the collapse on an underground burst main which she said the Chinese only discovered after the road broke away.

“What occurred yesterday was unfortunate as it was a combination of excavating and water that was running underground that was not visible to the naked eye. However, we were informed by one of the residents earlier in the week that they had reported water leaking in the area close to their home and was still awaiting the BWA (Barbados Water Authority) to repair it. We are unable to say how long it was leaking but the combination of both resulted in a section of the road to slip.

“BWA has since capped the main. A bypass road has been put in place and work will continue on King Street by COMPLANT in collaboration with the Soil Conservation Unit, BWA, Ministry of Transport & Works and private engineers from Design Collaborative,” she said. (MB)
