Thorne ‘not backing down’

There will be no backing down by the Leader of the Opposition in his quest for answers and to hold the Government accountable.

King’s Counsel Ralph Thorne made that clear yesterday, two days after he and at least three members on the Government’s side clashed during debate on the Appropriation Bill, 2024, in the House of Assembly.

When the sitting resumed yesterday with Minister of Tourism Ian Gooding-Edghill and tourism officials in the Well of the House, in a measured tone Thorne said: “I want to remind Government that I have a duty to this Parliament, to the people of this country, to seek accountability from Government . . . . It is a duty from which I will not resile and I ask the Government in the exercise of its own mandate to accommodate us in our duty to seek accountability.”

Last month, Thorne departed the ruling Barbados Labour Party, which held all 30 seats, to become the Opposition Leader and almost immediately joined the Democratic Labour Party and became its political leader.

Yesterday, he said the tourism issue was a patriotic one, and to Gooding-Edghill stated: “There shall be no hostility towards you, there shall be no hostility towards this industry; this is a moment in patriotism.” (AC)

  1. Mr. Thorne is indeed a thorn. He was a part of the BLP and now that he left he want answers to something that he help creates. He was there to sign everything the BLP was doing so now he want answers. Your hands was in the cookie jar also and knew the answers then. Don’t try to make yourself look good and clean cut now. DLP only took you on board to gather all the info they need to see if they could win the people of Barbados votes in the next election and become the next ruler.

    • Is this a trolling account? Maybe having been a member of the BLP and having witnessed firsthand matters not in agreement with, and having a sense that governance may be lacking as well as representation of the people, that there may be greater value speaking on these matters from the Opposition? I’m really hoping you are just a paid troll.

  2. Anyone in Corporate Barbados, to include elected officials, please raise your hands if at some point you didn’t agree with certain issues, and you bit your tounge. As Bajans.
If you believe that the current elected members in Barbados are in agreement with all the decisions of the PM, then you need to wake up from your dream. The PM made it clear in a previous statement that ” Women makes better leaders” and then she put together a portfolio to prove her accretion. Mr. Thore has a conscience. And he also has the right to cross the floor, he has the right to highlight issues that are present in Barbados at this time. The problem in Barbados like anyway else in the world is the fact that the haves doesn’t care about the have nots and don’t want to lose their piece of the pie. Can someone tell me what the jet-setting around the world have done to improve Barbados? Every trip out of Barbados is a borrowing experience, it’s a Ponzi scheme, that will never be repaid. Like they say in Barbados ” Borrow from Peter, to pay Paul.” Do your thing Mr. Thorne, you are educating the have nots, because the haves, they already know what is going on in Bim and their silence is deafing.

  3. In some professions, you are restricted from working in the same profession if resigned or quit working for the company e.g. Research and development for a specified number of years. This is in an effort to protect trade secrets. Any similarities here?

  4. I like seeing Mr. Thorne do the proper job of opposition and hold the government accountable.

As the saying goes, “politicians are a lot like diapers – both need to be changed often” . A strong opposition makes change possible.
