Small-craft advisory in effect for Barbados

Share post:

A small-craft advisory has been issued for the marine area, effective immediately and extending until 6 am on Wednesday, March 20th, 2024, or until conditions improve. This advisory may end sooner if conditions warrant.

Sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots and/or sea swells of 2.5 to 3.0 meters (8 to 10 feet) are expected to impact or are forecasted to affect the marine area within the next 36 hours.

Recent data collected by the BMS sea-surface drone has revealed significant wave heights of 2.8 meters along the southern coast of the island. Model projections indicate a further increase in swells through tomorrow. As a result, a small-craft advisory has been issued, primarily for the southern and eastern coastlines.

Key messages:

  • Beachgoers, especially those along the southern and eastern coastlines, are urged to exercise caution.
  • If venturing into the water, ensure the presence of an on-duty lifeguard.
  • Large open water swells pose hazards to some vessels; mariners are advised to take necessary precautions.
  • Surf activity is expected to be heightened during high tide periods.

Stay tuned for further updates, and adhere to all safety precautions during this advisory period.
