A flash flood watch is in effect for today and will be terminated at 6 p.m. or sooner if conditions warrant.

A bulletin from the Meteorological Office stated that maximum rainfall accumulations of 20.0 to 50.0 mm in light to heavy showers are expected across some central, eastern and northeastern districts of Barbados, due to localised activity.

It states that excessive rainfall today could generate flooding across low-lying areas in the watch area. These conditions are predicted to continue throughout the afternoon, with an improvement by tonight.

“There is a medium possibility of significant flooding, which may result in runoff from higher elevations. Soil erosion on exposed or scarred land surfaces. Water settlements on roads and fields at the foot of hills and coastal roads. Adjustments to the water levels of existing water bodies (ponds, etc.). Residents and visitors should also be aware that this alert level could elevate to red.

The public is advised to follow recommendations from the Department of Emergency Management. (PR)
