Improvements in times and distances at this year’s 51st CARIFTA Games.
Barbados’ coaching staff are optimistic the 31-member squad can surpass their season’s best performances when they were handicapped by having to compete on grass early in the year.
Head coach Ramon Armstrong was upbeat after yesterday’s early morning training session at the Kirani James Stadium where the competitive action starts today from 9 a.m.
“I expect a lot of P.Bs [personal best]. They looked really good. The athletes are in good shape. They are upbeat and I think you can expect some really good performances from Team Barbados over the next three days,” Armstrong told the Saturday Sun at the end of the pre-breakfast session.
Armstrong indicated the track is similar to the newly laid Ryan Brathwaite Track, where most of the athletes competed at the recent Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championships.
“Interesting enough, this is the identical surface [Regupol] that we have at the Usain Bolt [Sports Complex], so it is pretty familiar to them,” Armstrong said.
Last year, Barbados got ten medals at the Caribbean’s most prestigious junior track and field meet, returning from The Bahamas with two gold, six silver and two bronze. (EZS)
