In an amazing display of acceleration, pre-race favourite Mercedes rolled by the field on the outside with a super confident jockey, Rickey Walcott, in the irons to capture the 74th Barbados Guineas yesterday at the historic Garrison Savannah.

After sitting midpack along the backstretch, Mercedes, in the blink of an eye, soared home by two and a half lengths to bring jubilation to owners Stephen Jardine and Kerland Felece in the Classic, where three horses lost their riders. No one could be happier than trainer Richard Deane, who was celebrating his first Classic victory and his 487th career win in the grade 1 race, whose purse totalled $58,500.

The daughter of Aston Martin, who stopped the clock in one minute, 37.3 seconds, is now the only three-year-old that can capture the Barbados Triple Crown. (LY)
