Twenty-five people are displace after fire damaged multiple homes at Wellington Street, The City, on Sunday night.

Acting Chief Fire Officer Henderson Patrick said 16 houses were impacted by the fire – six were destroyed, three extensively damaged and seven slightly damaged.

“We had 25 people that were displaced by having their houses destroyed or in a state where they could not occupy it. It is an ongoing investigation. We will continue to look into the cause with the Barbados Police Service today because we have not determined anything,” he told sister station Starcom Network.

Patrick also refuted claims from some residents that the fire trucks had no water.

“The people suggest that the Fire Service turns up at scenes without water and there is no truth to that at all because every appliance is always filled with water before response. When it is resting in the appliance bay at any station, it is always filled with water.

“So we didn’t have a water challenge last night at all. What would have contributed to so many structured being affected [is], the proximity of these structures to each other and the volume of fire that was in the area.

The Barbados Police Service says two houses were extensively damaged, while there was moderate damage to four others.

Patrick and a team of 21 other fire officers, in three tenders, responded and extinguished the blaze.

The Barbados Police Service says investigations are continuing into the blaze which started around 10:20 p.m. (PR/SAT)
