With more than 400 outstanding cases before the Employment Rights Tribunal (ERT), the Barbados Employers’ Confederation (BEC) is calling for this and other agencies concerned with overseeing the enforcement of labour laws to be “properly resourced”.
Executive director Sheena Mayers-Granville pointed out yesterday that the Ministry of Labour had the chief mandate for enforcing labour legislation, while the ERT, with an “expanded mandate”, was responsible for adjudicating labour-related cases.
“We are concerned about the resources available to these institutions and one thing that the BEC would wish to highlight before we add new legislation [is] let us ensure that our enforcement agencies are properly resourced,” she said.
She added that the BEC was in discussion with the Ministry of Labour on how to improve the functioning of the ERT, but suggested the employers’ organisation was also aware that the ERT’s administrative structures would need to be improved.
