Sections of Christ Church are without power tonight after a massive grass fire resulted in burnt and fallen electricity poles.

The Barbados Light & Power Co. Ltd says the impacted areas include Kingsland, Newton, Durants, Vauxhall, Thornbury Hill, Gibbons, Oistins, Lowlands, St David’s, Parish Land, Providence, St Patrick’s and Bannatyne, which is currently impassable.

“Our team is currently on location working with The Barbados Fire Service to safely return service to customers,” a release said.

The Fire Service was kept busy Wednesday dispatching crews to at least seven fires.

A report for the grass fire in Bannatyne was received around 11:08 a.m. and that spread to surrounding areas, all the way to Kooyman along the ABC Highway.

A second fire along South Ridge also affected Uplands, Kent, Upton and St David’s.

Crews were also dispatched to Lower Greys, Christ Church; Flat Rock, St George and River, Golden Grove and Bushy Park, all in St Philip. A fire officer told Nation News it was “very busy” and “crazy” as they responded to the various calls.  (SAT)
