Abed: Time’s running out

Time is running out for Government to deliver on some of its promises to Bridgetown retailers ahead of Barbados’ hosting of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup

This concern was raised by chairman of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) Sub-Committee for the Revitalization of Bridgetown, Eddy Abed, who said that with one week to go before the tournament begins, several key improvements to The City were yet to be completed.

“Through the Chamber’s Sub-Committee for the Revitalisation of Bridgetown, we have canvassed many of our retail members who have indicated three serious issues. Members were hoping that Bridgetown would have more of a spruce-up as was promised for the World Cup. We were told that some of the vacant properties’ frontages would have been done up with murals, while flowers would have been added along the streets to give us a more tropical and festive feel. We have not yet seen this happen,” Abed said.

He said the lack of lighting and signage continues to be a concern for retailers, noting their ability to open at night during matches hinged on their satisfaction that workers and customers were safe.
