It wasn’t a bumper crowd by any stretch of the imagination for the 8:30 p.m. group stage match between associate teams Oman and Namibia tonight, but from as early as 6 p.m., there was some steady movement into Kensington Oval for the opening match of the International Cricket Council T20 Men’s World Cup in Barbados.
Outside, there were no long lines, and vendors’ stands remained quiet, but there were stalls filled with food, flags, whistles and even umbrellas for the crowd.
Along Fontabelle, there were plenty of patrons making their way to the facility, and many of them stopped at the Nation Zone, a special area outside the Nation Publishing Co. Limited, where cricket fans were able to win special prizes and be interviewed, offering special prizes and interaction with local artists or even sports persons.
Some British visitors were also counting their blessings, arriving early for last night’s opener, and getting a chance to meet legendary Windies pacer Joel ‘Bird’ Garner after he completed an interview in The Nation’s Zone.
“It’s not every day you get to meet a legend” Tom Buxton- said after posing alongside his friends from Yorkshire to take pictures with the former fearsome pacer. (BA)
