Put down the tools of destruction and take advantage of available opportunities.

This is the plea going out to the youth of Gall Hill and Silver Hill in Christ Church following recent fatal shootings.

It is coming from Member of Parliament (MP) for the area Adrian Forde, Minister of State in the Office of the Attorney General with responsibility for Crime Prevention Corey Lane, and Assistant Superintendent in charge of operations at Oistins Police Station Stephen Griffith, who were all taking part in a community walkabout yesterday evening.

Forde said he felt disturbed over the deaths of Omar Laron Haynes, 37, of Green Hill Drive, Silver Hill, on May 13, and Zakhir Avion Kimani Goodridge, 19, of Upper Crescent, Gall Hill, on June 12, so he was compelled to reach out.

“I am here with a heavy heart but I am grateful for the response of the Barbados Police Service. This walk-through is to sensitise residents to what we are doing to arrest the violence and, as the MP, I feel it incumbent to give them the assurance we will do everything in our power to ensure their safety,” he said.

Forde said young people – men in particular – have either been victims or perpetrators over the last month so the initiative was a way to speak to them. (CA)
