The Department of Archives will be closed to the public until further notice as the mop up process continues after a major fire on Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Earlier today, members of staff and the Barbados Fire Service returned to the compound. The former concentrated on some hot spots in the building.

Chief Archivist Ingrid Thompson said they were waiting on an all clear before they could enter the building and continue salvaging the records.

Initial reports from the Barbados Fire Service said the fire which destroyed Block D and several historic records, was caused by a lightning strike. (PR/SAT)
