An infestation of mosquitoes forced the closure of St George Secondary School today.

The Ministry of Education Technical and Vocational Training (METVT) said mitigation efforts by the Ministry of Health and the Board of Management proved unsuccessful after health officials visited the school at Constant, St George, to find the source of the infestation.

“Inspectors from the Ministry of Health and Wellness returned to the school plant on June 17, 2024, and have determined that the source of the infestation is likely within the community,” said a release from the Ministry of Education, adding they would continue to work with the relevant government agencies to swiftly formulate and implement mosquito eradication measures.

“To facilitate the carrying out of these measures, the METVT has made the decision to close the St George Secondary School while it works assiduously to ensure that students and staff at the institution are safe from any threat to their health and well-being as a result of the recent mosquito infestation,” the release stated.

There was no date on when the school would reopen. (PR/SAT)
