Vendors: A tough sell

Some vendors operating inside Kensington Oval during the International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup say they are not reaping the sweets as anticipated.

They lamented that the high cost of stall rentals, and the lower than expected sales, were eating into their profits.

Stall spaces at Kensington Oval were being rented for around $800 per day, according to some vendors.

Carronne Roach, who was working out of Stall No.13, told the DAILY NATION yesterday during the England versus United States Super Eights clash that things have been quite trying.

“It hasn’t been the greatest experience,” Roach said while standing footsteps away from the Hewitt & Inniss Stand. “Some of the matches did not bring any foot traffic and then we had situations where the fryers went out with the electricity when the breaker tripped and we weren’t able to cook which created a dip in the business,” she said.

Roach said her stall has suffered from four electrical outages across the eight match days at the “Mecca” during which no business could be conducted.

It was likely for that reason, she added, that her $1 fish cakes had been quite popular, outselling other meals.

Chairman of the National Organising Committee Noel Lynch had said some vendors operating outside of the Oval, who were complaining of modest sales, would be relocated to the inside as the Super Eights segment began.
