The journalism fraternity was plunged into mourning today following the death of Sam Wilkinson.

Wilkinson, who served as the Nation’s first sports editor, passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after a brief illness. He was 82.

Affectionately known as “7-Up Sam”, Wilkinson worked at the Daily News in the early part of his career and also hosted a sports commentary morning radio programme on Voice of Barbados and the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy and their two children, Samantha and Barry. (HG)
