The Wesley Hall Junior School in St. Michael has been declared fit to reopen to students on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, in collaboration with the Education Technical Management Unit (ETMU), identified and addressed critical issues at the school.
A walk-through conducted on July 8th, attended by Ministry officials, ETMU, President of the Barbados Teachers’ Union Rudy Maloney, Principal Herbert Gittens, members of the Health and Safety Committee, the assigned contractor, and the media, confirmed the completion of necessary repairs.
The areas of focus included trimming overgrown trees, replacing the ceiling in the nutrition room, and additional ceiling work in the Class 4 block. The fencing of the school perimeter has commenced, with ongoing efforts to enhance school security.
Speaking with the media after the walk-through, Principal Herbert Gittens declared, “The Ministry responded immediately, and would have put contractors in place to rectify some of these issues.”
He also said the Health and Safety Committee is satisfied with effort being made to rectify the issues, and that they are willing to allow for the opportunity for further work to continue during the summer months so they may enjoy better facilities in September.
The school will resume classes on Tuesday and Thursday this week, with a scheduled closure on Wednesday for graduation ceremonies.
This repair effort is part of a broader summer repairs programme by the Ministry of Education, targeting multiple schools for significant repair and restoration work.
