A quick response from the Barbados Fire Service (BFS) prevented the spread of an intense blaze that gutted the warehouse of Builders Value Mart in Reed Street, St Michael this morning.

Chief Fire Officer Errol Maynard said the cause of the fire is still undetermined and no injuries were reported.

A visibly shaken Asha “Mrs Ram” Mirchandani, owner of Builders Value Mart, stated she was deeply hurt by the losses.

She was unable to determine the extent of the damage at the time but said that it was a huge blow considering that government had not yet paid her for the Liquidation Centre since compulsorily acquiring the former Bay Street, St Michael building four years ago.

The fire, which was reported to the BFS at 9:28 a.m. was serviced by three tenders, one from the Bridgetown Port Fire Station; Worthing Fire Station and Bridgetown Fire Station.

According to Mirchandani, stock, supplies and hardware were kept in the warehouse while the business side is mainly handled out of an adjoining building which was unscathed. Some of the workers arrived to work and observed the blaze from a safe distance, thankful that they were not on duty when it started.
