The Barbados Meteorological Service (BMS) has upgraded the flash flood watch to a flash-flood warning for the western and southwestern sections of the island.

The warning follows excessive rainfall that has already deposited approximately 30 mm of rain across some western areas of Barbados.

Heavy showers are now spreading further into the southwestern and western parts of the island.

The current intense shower activity is expected to persist throughout the afternoon, driven by light winds and strong daytime heating. The ongoing weather conditions are contributing to the heightened risk of flash flooding.

A flash-flood warning is issued when rapid flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.

Residents are urged to adhere to guidance from the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) and stay updated through the BMS, DEM, and GIS websites, as well as local media networks. It is crucial to avoid travel in affected areas and to be cautious of rapidly changing conditions.

The warning was issued at 1:30 p.m. today and will remain in effect until 6:00 p.m., or sooner if conditions warrant.
