Flood Watch issued for Barbados

The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Flood Watch for the island until 6 p.m. on Sunday.

This comes as unstable weather conditions, coupled with deep-layered moisture and favourable upper-level divergence, are expected to bring heavy rainfall across the island.

So far, rainfall accumulation of close to an inch (25mm) has been recorded, and further accumulation of 1 to 3 inches (25 to 75mm) is forecast. This could result in significant flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, with runoff from higher elevations, water settling on roads, and possible erosion on exposed land surfaces.

Residents and visitors are urged to monitor updates from the Barbados Meteorological Services, the Department of Emergency Management, and local authorities, as the alert level could be elevated.

The public should also be prepared for potential road closures and traffic delays.

A flood watch is issued when conditions are favourable for flooding within the next 48 hours. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.

The Flood Watch will be updated at noon today or sooner if conditions change.
