The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the island until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

A thunderstorm watch is issued when there are spatial distributions of thunderstorms between 25 and 50 per cent, affecting or forecast to affect the land area within 48 hours.

Barbadians are reminded that lighting strikes can be life-threatening and could result in power outages, if lighting strikes power utility infrastructure.

A flash-flood warning issued earlier this afternoon has been extended until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, but could be discontinued sooner if conditions warrant.

A flash-flood warning is issued when rapid flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than six hours) is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.

The public is encouraged to monitor the DEM and GIS websites and social media pages, along with the local media networks for updates. (PR)
