Vector Danger

Mosquitoes are tiny, buzzing menaces that are more than an annoyance. They are vectors for diseases that can have serious health implications and now is the time to be aware and take action.

Mosquitoes are known to transmit a host of diseases, including the zika virus, dengue fever and malaria. These mosquito borne illnesses account for hundreds of millions of infections every year and while many people only associate mosquitoes with itchy bites, the real danger lies in their ability to spread deadly pathogens – killing more people than any other creature in the world.

So, understanding your surroundings is crucial. These vectors thrive in warm, humid environments and often breed in stagnant water. Pay attention to areas around your home such as flower pots, bird baths and clogged gutters; as these can all serve as breeding grounds for these silent killers.

While it is essential to address the environment, personal protection is equally vital. So here is what to do:

  • Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves and pants, especially when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Use repellants and reapply as directed. Take special considerations if you are sweating or in a heavily invested area.
  • Install and ensure that windows and doors are fitted with screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home. (DT)
