A British businessman, who said he is using his expertise to help Barbados transition to 100 per cent renewable energy, is coming under fire for proposing to set up wind turbines in two tourist attraction areas.
Marcus Heal, the chief executive officer of Pan Solar Energy, has 23 applications at the Planning & Development Department (PDD) for various renewable energy projects, including erection of wind turbines, solar farms and green houses.
Some of the applications have been permitted but among those recently submitted are ones for the erection of wind turbines at Cave, St Lucy, in the vicinity of Animal Flower Cave, and the Morgan Lewis Plantation.
Manuel Ward, owner of the Animal Flower Cave, which has been in operation for almost 100 years, started a petition against the erection of the turbines.
Ward told the Sunday Sun the turbines would impact the aesthetics of the area, as he also expressed concern about noise.
