What is the concept of self-love and why is it so important? Is it just a new-age fad for the younger generation or is it a necessity for humans of all ages to make life a bit easier?

For many of us, self-love might sound like a luxury for people with too much time on their hands. However, the ability to have compassion for our physical and mental health is a requirement to ensure the optimum level of well-being.

The term self-love can be defined as a state of appreciation for ourselves with a high regard for maintaining well-being and happiness. While this form of care can mean different things for different people, it typically involves caring for your own wants and needs and a disdain for settling and sacrificing your happiness to please others.

Self-love means accepting your emotions for what they are and putting your physical, emotional and mental well-being first. This attribute is the stepping stone for motivation into making healthier choices, as you are more likely to choose foods and activities which sustain your well-being and serve you well.

While practicing self-love is up to individual preference, it is best to start off with the basics such as:

  • Listening to your body.
  • Speaking positive affirmations over yourself.
  • Taking breaks from work to move or stretch.
  • Put the phone down and connect to yourself or others, or do something creative.
  • Eating healthily, but sometimes indulging in your favourite foods.
