National wrestlers Adrian Maynard and Kodi Marshall made significant strides toward qualifying for the 2025 Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay after securing podium finishes at the Sparta Cup Puerto Rico National Championship this past weekend.
Led by Under-23 national champion Maynard with a silver medal performance, the Barbados team brought home four medals, including of three bronze.
Reflecting on his performance, Inniss, who competed in the 74-kilogramme senior freestyle division, was particularly proud of his performance, describing the tournament as a significant benchmark in his wrestling journey.
“I am ecstatic about my performance in the Sparta Cup. Every aspect of my game – strength, speed, cardio, flexibility, technique has improved – significantly since the Pat Shaw Memorial earlier this year.
“This time in Puerto Rico served as another benchmark, and I will continue to make vast improvements within both my general knowledge and specific aspects of the sport I love so much,” Inniss told Midweek Sport.
Though he had his sights set on domination rather than simply winning, Inniss acknowledged that his loss of the silver medal provided valuable lessons. In a hard-fought match, Inniss narrowly lost 5-4, but he took it as a positive experience, realizing how close he was to victory.
“That loss sparked a fire within me. I was on the precipice of greatness and just fell short by the slimmest of margins. It led me to tell my team, ‘the next one we’re getting back in blood,’ and that mentality helped me dominate my next match 13-0 and cement my victory with another pin,” he stated.
For Under-20 freestyle wrestler Marshall, making the podium was a moment of pride and validation. “I feel really excited and proud because I made the podium. It’s such a great accomplishment that shows all the hard work and dedication I put into it. Knowing that my efforts paid off gives me a sense of validation and motivates me to keep striving for more,” Marshall said.
Jessica Derrell, competing in the women’s open division, also reflected on the improvements she saw in her game, particularly in terms of her strength and defensive skills.
“From the very first match, I could feel a marked improvement between my last competition and now. My increased upper arm and neck strength has directly influenced my defensive skills, and I am significantly more satisfied with how I handled my competitors,” she said.
The wrestling team extended thanks to the Payne Wrestling Club, the Barbados Olympic Association, the Barbados Wrestling Association and the Sparta Club in Puerto Rico for their support in making this journey possible. (ML)
