Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has expressed heartfelt condolences following the passing of Tyrone Trotman, a celebrated figure in Barbadian culture and arts.

Below is the full statement from Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley:

“It was indeed sad to learn yesterday of the passing of Tyrone Trotman, a genuine icon in the Barbadian culture and arts community for decades.

While many may refer to him fondly as “Tyrone the Dancer”, his involvement in giving life and meaning to so many urban youths for what seemed like a lifetime, made his contribution to the development of this country all the more valuable.

We have worked together on several projects in my constituency, but I know that Tyrone’s engagement touched the hearts and lives of residents across that urban corridor and beyond. As a dancer, dance instructor, choreographer, and cultural mentor, his presence has been felt in the work of such groups as Dance Nationale Afrique, Dancin’ Africa, Haynesville Community Group, and the St. John Dramatic Society.

I also recall that his appreciation for harnessing that natural connection between how we portray our culture and our African roots dates back to the heyday of Yoruba Yard and the work of my uncle, The Most Honourable Elton “Elombe” Mottley.

On behalf of the Government and people of Barbados, especially those young Barbadians who gained so much from his painstaking work to promote and advance indigenous dance, I express sincere appreciation for his yeoman service. We must never allow his work to be forgotten.

May the soul of Tyrone Trotman rest in peace and rise in glory.”
