Shoppers and staff were evacuated this evening after a fire broke out at the Warrens Shopping Complex, which houses Massy Supermarket and several other businesses.

Station Officer Roger Bourne of the Barbados Fire Service confirmed that the blaze originated in a laundromat within the complex. The fire was traced to a dryer, which ignited and produced thick smoke. The smoke spread rapidly through the building’s air conditioning system, forcing Massy Supermarket to close its doors temporarily.

While certain parts of the complex were deemed safe and given the all-clear, the supermarket remains closed due to dense smoke lingering in the space.

Efforts are underway to vent the smoke, with hopes of reopening the store for business tomorrow.

More information will be provided as it comes to hand.
